Students in Santa Monica, California, have been arrested for participating in a fight between at teacher and pupil that has caused a great deal of controversy in the community. Much of the conflict was captured on video.
An 18-year-old man was arrested, accused of threatening a school official, battery against a school employee, marijuana possession, and possessing a weapon on campus. He was carrying a box cutter at the time, according to police.
A 16-year-old boy was also arrested on charges of battery against a school employee.
The video, taken by cellphone, shows a science teacher, who is also a wrestling coach, grappling with a student in class. No one was punched, but the teacher was able to pin the student with a wrestling hold. A school official stated the incident started because of an argument over drug use, but could confirm reports that the involved student had actually brought marijuana to school.
The local superintendant called the video “utterly alarming” and found the method used by the science teacher to contain the student “unacceptable”. Many parents, however, praised the teacher for his intervention and a Facebook support page has received nearly 12,000 “likes” so far. The superintendent subsequently apologized for her remarks and stated she is going to see that the incident is thoroughly investigated.
